2009 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team

The Event

The 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, the 39th edition of the event, will be held from 9-18 July 2009 at the the Iate Clube de Armação de Buzios (ICAB) in the city of Armação de Búzios, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. 

The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team performed creditably, finishing 5th on Volvo Nations Trophy standings against stiff competition from leading sailing nations.

Sam Meech won the gold medal in the Boys Single Handed Dinghy division, after an impressive display of sailing skill and sportsmanship. Team mates Alex Maloney & Bianca Barbarich Bacher narrowly missed out on a medal at this event however went on to win the Open Women’s International 420 Worlds in Italy the following week proving their potential for the future in Olympic women’s double handed disciplines.
