Yachting New Zealand Olympic Programme

New Zealand has a long history of sailing excellence

Winning an Olympic medal is a life changing experience and to win one you will need to be ruthless in its pursuit

Our High Performance Athlete Development Model has recently been aligned with research on athlete performance and progression within Olympic yachting. This alignment will enable Yachting New Zealand to provide more targeted support to both athletes and coaches in their quest for an Olympic Medal based on their fit with the evidence based progression model.

A 3 tier model will be implemented to support and guide Yachting New Zealand’s Olympic Programme.

  • The model is based on the athlete’s ability to deliver a medal in 2012 and 2016
  • Athlete performance levels represent the minimum requirement for squad eligibility, however they do not guarantee selection
  • Coaching, training, competition and support services are allocated based on an athlete’s level
  • The length of time a sailor remains at each level will be continually reviewed. Sailors are expected to be continuously improving and re-qualify for a level on a yearly basis

The 3 tier model aligns with the Olympic Programme Athlete Development Pathway and as such it will guide decision making, however Yachting New Zealand acknowledges there will be exceptions in terms of age and ability and these cases will be assessed on an individual basis.

Sailor Expressions of Interest

Anyone interested in an Olympic campaign is asked to complete an Expression of Interest form and return it to Yachting New Zealand.

Christmas Message 2009

Dear All,

Here is a brief Christmas note with some dates and plans for next year. Let me have any feedback on this.

In March we will repeat the fitness testing. The probable dates for this will be 3.4.5 March. I will come up with a suitable prize for the person that makes the biggest percentage increase on their scores from the October testing.

Talking of prizes, remember to send in venue reports (to: pol84natalia@yahoo.com.au ) from all the international regattas that you attend in 2010 so that we can build up a library of these for future reference. Another suitable prize will be awarded in October 2010.

We are also looking at running a starting clinic on the weekend of the 13,14th March, details to be arranged. Can you please let Beth (Reception@yachtingnz.org.nz) know if you would be interested in this and any ideas that you may have around this topic?

International Travel Grants: Please follow this link  for details around travel grants for Olympic classes for 2010.

 All the best,

 Jez
