Local Council Support for Your Event
Many District Councils are interested in working with Yacht Clubs and Classes to bring events to their region. Any event – Club one off events, National Championships, World Championships. Councils can often offer administrative, marketing and promotional assistance – and in some instances dollars. This is an awesome opportunity for Clubs and Classes!
We suggest you make contact with your local council and set a meeting with the marketing personnel or tourism officer - if possible include the Mayor. At the very least, send a copy of the Minutes of your meeting or a letter outling your proposal and discussion to the Mayor. Yachting has a huge amount to offer regions. They’re particularly interested in economic impact.
Have a look at what yachting events are currently held in your region. Think about what events you might attract – or create. Have an educated guess at how many accommodation nights per event (multiplied by potential entrants and supporters). Where will these entrants eat? How many temporary jobs might be created? Will the event be of interest to national media – or even international media?Meet with your Council well prepared – and remember – good things come to those who ask!
Tell them exactly what you’d like them to contribute. Remember expertise is always more forthcoming than money. Think of the things Councils have that you might be able to borrow – crowd-control barriers, marquees and tents, tables and chairs from local halls.
Offer the Council return for their investment – invite them to the parties and prize giving, ask the Mayor to present the prizes, give them some space to erect signage, offer to put their logo on your programme.
