YNZ National Youth Squad

Yachting New Zealand National Youth Squad

Yachting New Zealand’s National Youth Squad aims to improve the skills of New Zealand’s top youth aged Sailors. This squad is not to be mistaken for the ISAF Youth Worlds Team although some events are combined with the preparation of this team once selected.

The timing of the National Youth Squad activities is typically between February and May each year and is line with the selection and preparation of the ISAF Youth Worlds Team from year to year.

Each member of the National Youth Squad will receive class/event specific coaching at clinics, group lecture on performance topics such as sports psychology, strength & conditioning, planning and preparation, as well as receive a muscular skeletal screening to identify potential problems with muscle balance that may lead to long term damage through overuse as a result of sailing activity.

The eligibility & age requirements for squad membership are consistent with that of the ISAF Youth Worlds from year to year.  (not turned 19 before the 31st December in the year of the event). Double Boys & Double handed Girls will be identified by results in the 420 division. Mixed teams may also be considered however this will be discretionary based on performance.  Membership to the squad in 2009 will be  approximately $250 per person.

In the past the Sail Auckland Regatta has been utilised to identify the top 3 sailors and crews in a number of recognised youth classes.

In 2009 sail Auckland will once again be used to identify a select group of sailors in the following classes.

Laser Radial Boys
Laser Radial Girls
420 Boys
420 Girls
RSX Boys
RSX Girls

Typically the top 3 sailors in each of the identified classes are invited to join the National Youth Squad and attend National Youth Squad training activities. Further to this sailors may be selected on their merits in the Laser Standard, the 29er or the Hobie 16 on a discretionary basis based on performance at summer events and availability of resources. Selected members of the ISAF Youth Worlds Team will also be included in the National Youth Squad.
